Photoshop Brushes in Action: Envelope Design

Two weeks ago, I had this idea to create a unique envelope for my sisters-in-law birthday. But, in the meantime, she left for vacation and now she’s enjoying Californian hotels :)

So, I still have a chance to make a unique envelope for her birthday and it will wait for her when she’s back!

So, you guessed, today’s “download and print” freebie is - envelope template.

Photoshop Brushes in Action: Envelope Template Design – Download & Print!

The original size of this envelope template is 8″x5″ on the 12″x12″ paper size, but you can print it on any size (like I did) just use “fit to paper” option on your Print window. For this envelope design I used Swirled Floral Photoshop Edges Brushes set and Floral Shapes Photoshop Brushes set. Both available in  our little shop.

Now, take a look at my short photo story on how to make an envelope. It’s fun and easy so, enjoy!

1. Print the envelope template and cut out the envelope shape. I used fancy-edge scissors just to cover my possible cutting mistakes :)

2. Fold the paper carefully and try to match (as much as you can) the illustrations on the bottom flap and top flap of the envelope. Apply 1/4″ wide double-sided tape along the side edges of the back, starting below the curves.

3. That’s it! This is the Back side of the envelope. The flaps are designed to match one another!

4. And the front side of the envelope with the place where you can write your loved one name :)

“A free gift”? What kind of phrase is that?

I was browsing the net, minding my own business the other day, when I ran into one more commercial that uses the stupidest phrase ever used in marketing copy: “Free gift inside!“. Again and again and again they insult us consumers with this nonsense phrase! There are variations – as you know. Sometimes it’s “We’ll send you a free gift” of “Free bonus!“.

The word bonus implies that it’s free otherwise it would not be a bonus. It would be just a normal payable product or service. Gee!

Free gift. Hey! C’mon!? What’s this? Are we, consumers, so stupid? Are marketers trying to convince us that gifts should usually be payed for? Like: “Yo, dad, c’mon buy me a gift for birthday, I’ll pay you for that.” How silly is that???

But, no! Marketing copywriters are constantly emphasizing the “Free gift inside!” phrase. Wow! A gift? And it’s free??? Hey!

Can’t they just say: “Buy this and we’ll send you a gift.” Why to they need to push the “free” word, like, just about everywhere??? Soon, in restaurants we’ll hear: “Order a soup and we’ll rent you a spoon and the plate – for free!” Just for the sake of pushing the word “free” in the sentence.

It’s just so annoying. I had to share it with you. And I’ll make a promise. I will never never offer a “free gift” when you buy Photoshop brushes or vectors, or scrapbook kits from me. I will present you with a gift. Normal gift. We all know what the word “gift” means. I don’t know about you, but I hate the BS.

P.S.
Gift – something given voluntarily without payment in return (dictionary.reference.com).

P.P.S.
Ha! You just thought there will be no gift for you. Haven’t you?

Let me present you with a Gift – Retro Shapes Photoshop Brushes set

How to draw swirls illustrations in Adobe Illustrator, Part One

November 7, 2007 |  by  |  Tutorials  |  , , , , ,  |  12 Comments

I received several inquiries on how to draw a swirls illustration. Swirls illustration does not require extensive knowledge, only a little practice and a visit of a “Muse”.

One of the problems that beginners face when entering the world of adobe illustrator is proper positioning of the vector control points.

For starters, my advice is to make a circle (use Elipse tool+Shift combination). Select the circle using “Direct SelectionTool”, four basic points and vector controllers (red extension lines).

Draw using “Pencil tool” and practice making various swirls. This is just for practice, we are not making any swirls there, but it is important to play with handles here and try to create some shape for the practice purposes.

Play with “Pencil Tool Preferences”, see how they affect the drawing.

Now, take it to the next step and make a simple “swirl” shape. Something like this:

Then make it’s inner (or outer) outline following the existing line. Connect outer and inner line in order to get closed shape: select two starting points and to Object -> Path -> Join. Do the same with two ending points. Reduce or add points using “Pen Tool” in order to fine tune the swirl shape.

Color the swirl and store it as a Brush or a Symbol. Make a small database of various shapes that will later be used for drawing Swirls Illustrations, like mine “Adobe Illustrator Swirls Symbols”Subscribe to my newslwtter and download them for free
