PS brushes in action – Paper design and the featured artist of the day

I did not have to wait for too long to hear from you guys. The response I got from designers and artists who use my brushes in their work was great. But, don’t let that discourage you, send me your works, or links to your works where you used my brushes and will feature them here on this blog (remember 3000+ visitors daily).

So, the first artist of the day, ladies and gentleman, is Kathi! Kathy used Swirls Floral brushes set (42 brushes) in her paper design:

Paper design and the featured artist of the day

Kathi sells her designs at Funky Playground Designs, and these indeed are beautiful designs.

I’m always happy to hear how designers are using my brushes for their designs. I’m even happier when I learn that they successfully sell their designs. Not because they make money with it, but because selling means recognition. When they sell their staff it is a recognition. A proof that they’re good at what they do. And the fact that my brushes helped them achieve that, that’s makes me even more happy!

Not to mention how happy these designers are when their work gets recognized :)

So, stay well, in my next post I will write about another great artist that successfully applies Photoshop brushes in their work. In the meantime, check for more Photoshop brushes and other design resources, I’m sure you’ll find interesting stuff for your future designs.

And … don’t forget about the most important thing: Have fun creating!

“A free gift”? What kind of phrase is that?

I was browsing the net, minding my own business the other day, when I ran into one more commercial that uses the stupidest phrase ever used in marketing copy: “Free gift inside!“. Again and again and again they insult us consumers with this nonsense phrase! There are variations – as you know. Sometimes it’s “We’ll send you a free gift” of “Free bonus!“.

The word bonus implies that it’s free otherwise it would not be a bonus. It would be just a normal payable product or service. Gee!

Free gift. Hey! C’mon!? What’s this? Are we, consumers, so stupid? Are marketers trying to convince us that gifts should usually be payed for? Like: “Yo, dad, c’mon buy me a gift for birthday, I’ll pay you for that.” How silly is that???

But, no! Marketing copywriters are constantly emphasizing the “Free gift inside!” phrase. Wow! A gift? And it’s free??? Hey!

Can’t they just say: “Buy this and we’ll send you a gift.” Why to they need to push the “free” word, like, just about everywhere??? Soon, in restaurants we’ll hear: “Order a soup and we’ll rent you a spoon and the plate – for free!” Just for the sake of pushing the word “free” in the sentence.

It’s just so annoying. I had to share it with you. And I’ll make a promise. I will never never offer a “free gift” when you buy Photoshop brushes or vectors, or scrapbook kits from me. I will present you with a gift. Normal gift. We all know what the word “gift” means. I don’t know about you, but I hate the BS.

P.S.
Gift – something given voluntarily without payment in return (dictionary.reference.com).

P.P.S.
Ha! You just thought there will be no gift for you. Haven’t you?

Tutorial: How to draw a banner (scroll) in Illustrator

Tutorial: How to draw a banner (scroll) in Illustrator

Wrapping scrolls around illustrations or images are quite popular designers little trick these days. I’ll show you how to draw a scroll “easy way”.

Step 1
Assuming that you know how the scroll (banner) looks like, draw just one half of it (start left or right from the center). I am using the Wacom tablet and usually I use the “Pen tool”, but I think that drawing with the “Path tool” is easier for those of you who use a mouse.

Step 2
You can modify the shape as you wish, just keep in mind that you have to draw a folded part on the side.

Step 3
Now draw the folded part, which will “fly on the wind”.

Step 4
The folded part of the banner must be placed just bellow the main part, now you have to follow the path between the main part and the folded part and draw another folded part between them.

Step 5
That connection should look like this:

Step 6
Now copy+paste these three parts, and mirror them horizontally. Join middle anchors and the banner is finished. Color them as you wish. Add some cracks and you’ll get the “old-world” style.
