The Flying Pigs of Happiness, Photoshop Brushes

The Flying Pigs of Happiness, Photoshop Brushes

I got  “The Pig of Happiness” mug by Edward Monkton from my sister some time ago. She brought it from her trip to London and … it instantly became my favorite mug (who doesn’t have one). It says: “May his JOYFUL SMILE remind us how much there is to be HAPPY about”

So, inspired by this totally cool “making me smile” mug, I made my own version of Happy Pigs. I gave them wings and made them fly, so now they’re called

The Flying Pigs of Happiness

and I turned them into

Photoshop brushes

And I dedicated that brush to all my loving GBG members which will get it for free in our GBG eZine July 2010 edition (you too can joing GBG here ->)!

These 8 flying piggies will be available as .abr and .png files and I hope you will have fun using them as a decoration for your designs! I know I had fun creating them!

So, here they are 8 flying piggies, I hope they will put a smile on your face :

Colored version

Flying piggies – monochrome version

So, you will get it in our next GBG eZine which should come out soon.

In the mean time, don’t forget to check out on our Summer 2010 Competition Page and take part in it!

Enjoy the day, love you all.

Silvia

P.S.

Do you have your favorite mug? Where (and who) did you get if from? What does it look like? Leave a comment, it would be great to hear from you.

New PS Brushes sketch: Fantasy birds

New PS Brushes sketch: Fantasy birds

Guys! My apartment is a mess! It is the first day of the removal (we’re moving to that house we bought few months ago) and, you can imagine, it’s just boxes all around this place.

So, I thought, since I won’t be making any new posts for a next few days, I’d just show you my mock-up for the next Photoshop brushes I had in mind. I’ll call them: Fantasy birds :)

I started to make this draft today, but, since the movers are coming on Monday, there was now way for me to finish it  today too. I mean, I would need at least two days anyway. So, I hope you like the preview and I promise to have the full package ready as soon as I settle down at my new place.

Until then, stay well, have a great weekend and we’ll talk soon.

:)

Hello to all you creative minds!

Today, I wanted tell you about one great idea! It is all about being creative, making some great presents and even some money at the same time.

So, here it is:

Some three days ago, I was wandering around the Internet when I stumbled upon Spoonflower web site. Spoonflower offers creative people possibility to have their own designs on fabric for pillows, clothes, table clothes, bags…. and many other things.

Creating unique fabric design with Spoonflower is easy: make your own pattern, upload it to their web site, choose your preferred fabric size, make an order and wait. The fabric with your own unique design should be printed and shipped within 3 weeks.

Right now, they are in beta mode: that means that you can register and create an account only by invitation. But I managed, so there should be no problem at all.

If you know how to sew or make any clothes – you can use this to make some great and unique Christmas presents, or even sell some of your unique stuff! But if you don’t know, don’t worry – you can find some basics on the topic at Instructables.com and if you want to sew using sewing machine you can try this tips: How to Sew, using sewing machine.

Happiness

I don’t know about you gals ‘n guys, but I’m kind of a cat person. Not that there’s anything wrong with dogs and other living creatures under the sun, but I love cats.

Just a look at the cat stretching out on the sun is enough to fill my heart with joy.

So, what does it have to do with happiness? Loads, I’d say. At least in my case.

So, I said to myself, how about making a Cat theme Photoshop brush set?

I did a few sketches and it looked like a good beginning. Check them out. Tell me what you think. Are you a cat or a dog person? Would you like to see such a theme in your Photoshop brushes palette? What makes you happy?

Love,
Silvia

Creating Your Own Fractal Photoshop Brush: Tutorial

Creating Your Own Fractal Photoshop Brush: Tutorial

Hello everyone and Happy Easter!

For today I have prepared another tutorial on how to create your own brush.

This time it is about creating fractal Photoshop brushes.

I am sure many of you will like this kind of graphics:

Create Your own Fractal Photoshop brush: Tutorial

But, if you are a beginner you probably assume that it’s extremely difficult, first, create your own custom brush and then create such graphic with it.

Well, it’s not! And I intend to show you how to do it in this tutorial.

So, for starters, to follow this tutorial you will need to have CorelDRAW! or Adobe Illustrator or some other software that does vector graphics. First, we will create a shape in CorelDRAW!, then export it to .EPS file, import to Photoshop and make a brush out of it. And that’s it!

So, let’s start CorelDRAW! and make a nice curved line using Bezier Tool:

Photoshop 7.0 brushes - Create your own fractal brush

Photoshop Tutorial - Make your own custom fractal brushes

Then, duplicate this line by dragging it and right-clicking the mouse on a new location:

Photoshop Tutorial - Make your own custom fractal brushes

Then select both line and go to Effects->Blend, Apply (you can leave all settings as they are)

Photoshop Tutorial - Make your own custom fractal brushes

Modify and adjust the shape by selecting various curves from top or bottom line and moving it around until you are happy with the shape.

Photoshop Tutorial - Make your own custom fractal brushes

I must say, I was quite happy with this one :)

So, basically, our work here at CorelDRAW! is over. Now, when I think, maybe I should have used Illustrator, but let’s leave it for another occasion.

The last thing that is to be done here in CorelDRAW! is to export that shape in to .eps file. Go to File->Export-> On the pull down menu select “.eps”, give it some name, leave “Selected only” switched on and click Export:

Photoshop Tutorial - Make your own custom fractal brushes exporting to eps

Click ok and save it.

Now, let’s move onto Photoshop. Here I used Photoshop CS3 but you can use any version from Photoshop 7.0 onward.

In Photoshop go to File->New, Give it dimensions 2500px by 2500px (that is the largest brush size you can get) at 300px (it has to be big so that it can be used for large format printing as well, not just web).

Now, go to File -> Place, browse to our .eps file and place it into this new Photoshop file. Make sure to stretch it before hitting enter so that it is stretched from end to end like this:

Photoshop Tutorial - Make your own custom fractal brushes

Fine! We’re getting there, bare with me just a few more minutes :)

As you have probably noticed the .eps we placed onto our new Photoshop file is not really black as it should be. This can cause this brush to appear transparent when used in the future and therefore we need to make sure that our future brush is really black. Therefore, make sure you selected the layer with our shape and go to Layer -> New Adjustment Layer -> Curves and to the following:

Photoshop Tutorial - Make your own custom fractal brushes

Now, our future brush will be black!

So, after this we are ready to finish and create our first, custom made, Photoshop brush. Go to Edit -> Define Brush Preset and give it a name:

Photoshop Tutorial - Make your own custom fractal brushes

It will automatically appear as the last one on your present brushes list.

That’s it! Voila! Congratulations! You just made your own brush! Now, if you want to save it as an independent .abr file you will need to delete all brushes from your brushes list because otherwise your .abr (brush file) will contain all brushes from the list. So, after you deleted all other brushes except for the one you just created

Photoshop Tutorial - Make your own custom fractal brushes

Now, you just go to save brushes, give it a name and save it to:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Presets\Brushes

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Presets\Brushes

And, now that’s really the end.

Now with a little playing with brush settings and Filter -> Render -> Lens Flare in no time you can create image like the one on the top of this post.

Look, in case you don’t want to go through all this and think that the trouble of creating some 29 fractal brushes is worth $9,99 - I’ll be much obliged if you go and buy the whole 29 Fractal Brushes Set.

Brushes are ready to download in two editions:

Lite edition: Fractals – set of 3 Photoshop brushes

I just gave away a graphics-illustrations T-shirt to someone I don’t even know

I was just getting ready to become depressed as nothing interesting was happening today and it was just about to became… boring? until few hours ago I run into that shoemoney blog.

It seemed like every blogger in the universe knows about that guy except for me. OK, I am a designer and a photographer so I guess It’s forgivable. Anyways, if he is to be trusted it seems like that guy is making some serious money with his blog which, of course, grabbed my attention.

Now, among other stuff that he does, he also takes a pictures of himself. A lot. I don’t know, maybe some think he’s sexy being bold with glasses and all. Anyway, if he gets all that attention (like thousands of visitors every day) I thought it would be nice if he published a picture of him self wearing a T-Shirt with my logo on it.

So, to cut the short story long (or was it the other way around) I decided to send him a T-Shirt with my logo on it and let him make one his “Free Shirt Friday” post using it. He gets a shirt and I get exposure.

I was just figuring this whole thing out when the following funny spam email popped in (what a laugh!):

“Award Claim

How to draw swirls illustrations in Adobe Illustrator, Part Two

I assume that you worked on your swirls creation technique with a little help of my previous tutorial (How to draw swirls illustrations in Adobe Illustrator, Part One).

Now, let’s make a little case study. To make a Swirl Illustrations that looks like the one in the header of graphics-illustrations blog, we need:

Determine the size and shape of the blank space. We will now use simple quadrant shape.

How to draw swirls illustrations in Adobe Illustrator

Create a new layer bellow. Use the simple artist brush symbol below the layer that contains the quadrant to create an “outline”
How to draw swirls illustrations in Adobe Illustrator

Again, create a new layer. Now add some ink splatters around, on that layer.

How to draw swirls illustrations in Adobe Illustrator

Add some swirls on the layer above the layer that contains ink splatters (but bellow the layer with the shape and layer with it’s outline)

How to draw swirls illustrations in Adobe Illustrator

Add some more swirls, and also add some swirls on the new layer on the top.

How to draw swirls illustrations in Adobe Illustrator

In the end, add some stars… and that’s it.

If you’re wondering how to colorize the symbols or even change their shapes: select all symbols and use the “Break Link to Symbol” – now you can manipulate shapes and colors until the dawn breaks or until you’re happy with the results – whatever comes first

How to draw swirls illustrations in Adobe Illustrator, Part One

November 7, 2007 |  by  |  Tutorials  |  , , , , ,  |  12 Comments

I received several inquiries on how to draw a swirls illustration. Swirls illustration does not require extensive knowledge, only a little practice and a visit of a “Muse”.

One of the problems that beginners face when entering the world of adobe illustrator is proper positioning of the vector control points.

For starters, my advice is to make a circle (use Elipse tool+Shift combination). Select the circle using “Direct SelectionTool”, four basic points and vector controllers (red extension lines).

How to draw swirls illustrations in Adobe Illustrator, Part One

Draw using “Pencil tool” and practice making various swirls. This is just for practice, we are not making any swirls there, but it is important to play with handles here and try to create some shape for the practice purposes.

How to draw swirls illustrations in Adobe Illustrator, Part One

Play with “Pencil Tool Preferences”, see how they affect the drawing.

How to draw swirls illustrations in Adobe Illustrator, Part One

Now, take it to the next step and make a simple “swirl” shape. Something like this:

How to draw swirls illustrations in Adobe Illustrator, Part One

Then make it’s inner (or outer) outline following the existing line. Connect outer and inner line in order to get closed shape: select two starting points and to Object -> Path -> Join. Do the same with two ending points. Reduce or add points using “Pen Tool” in order to fine tune the swirl shape.

Color the swirl and store it as a Brush or a Symbol. Make a small database of various shapes that will later be used for drawing Swirls Illustrations, like mine “Adobe Illustrator Swirls Symbols”Subscribe to my newslwtter and download them for free

Tutorial: How to draw a banner (scroll) in Illustrator

Tutorial: How to draw a banner (scroll) in Illustrator

Wrapping scrolls around illustrations or images are quite popular designers little trick these days. I’ll show you how to draw a scroll “easy way”.

Step 1
Assuming that you know how the scroll (banner) looks like, draw just one half of it (start left or right from the center). I am using the Wacom tablet and usually I use the “Pen tool”, but I think that drawing with the “Path tool” is easier for those of you who use a mouse.

Step 2
You can modify the shape as you wish, just keep in mind that you have to draw a folded part on the side.

Step 3
Now draw the folded part, which will “fly on the wind”.

Step 4
The folded part of the banner must be placed just bellow the main part, now you have to follow the path between the main part and the folded part and draw another folded part between them.

Step 5
That connection should look like this:

Step 6
Now copy+paste these three parts, and mirror them horizontally. Join middle anchors and the banner is finished. Color them as you wish. Add some cracks and you’ll get the “old-world” style.

How to Draw a Dragon

There is this community web site that really made me think about drawing and how much does it have to do with talent and what part of the success lies in hard work and persistence. Web site called dragoart

I believe in tutorials as much as I believe in hard work. Especially if you are not blessed with a true, natural talent for drawing. And there is only a minority of such people.

So, if you are willing to put a little effort to improve your drawing skills and particularly if you are into dragons and fantasy (I know I am) – here is a compilation list of tutorials about drawing a dragon –>

Anyway, your first attempt might probably look like this.

However, after several attempts and attacks on that dragon – here is the result:

Much better, huh? Maybe I’ll buy that sketchbook soon and work harder! Black one, of course :)

Happy thoughts!

Tutorial: Simple web shop icon

Let me show you how I created a simple web shop icon (shop trolley). In Illustrator (or similar vector software) make a simplified shop trolley “L” shape (the handle + basis).

011.jpg

Now, we will select the basis line and copy it two more times to get something similar to E shape where the left vertical line end up above the top horizontal line.

021.jpg

Draw one vertical line that will close the shape.
031.jpg

As for the wheels, create two circles below the basis of the trolley. Make one ellipse and then a second one, smaller in the middle of the first one.(Do that using Ellipse tool). Select both ellipses, and subtract them with “Pathfinder -> Subtract from shape area” option. There is our wheel :)
041.jpg

Copy that wheel and position them under the basis.
051.jpg

Now for the background circle follow the same procedure as for the wheels. One small difference is that holding ALT+TAB will make this ellipse a perfect circle. Color it, place it behind the trolley and – voila!

Simple, innit?

Learn to draw, for beginners

Try a little exercise called “Vase/Faces” where you can see how a side benefit of learning to draw is getting to know your own brain a little better.

… in Illustrator.
Step 1
First, place a high-contrasted image (high-key image, in this case my model Iva) into Illustrator work area.

Step 1

Step 2
There is a bunch of tracing software and plug-ins out there, but for this example I decided to do tracing manually with pencil tool.

Step

Step 3
Use your imagination, draw something that you imagine, not just what you see.

Step 3

Step 4
In order to get a right side of the face copy+paste left half, mirror and join to get the full picture, and then draw an oval shape around.

Step 4

Step 5
Make some basic elements like simple flowers, leaves, circles and stains.

Step 5

Step 6
On the other hand, if you need this illustration for any purposes and don’t want to bother going through all this then get it for 1$ at Shutterstock.
