I assume that you worked on your swirls creation technique with a little help of my previous tutorial (How to draw swirls illustrations in Adobe Illustrator, Part One).
Now, let’s make a little case study. To make a Swirl Illustrations that looks like the one in the header of graphics-illustrations blog, we need:
- Swirls symbols set, Adobe Illustrator
- Ink Splatter symobls set, Adobe Illustrator
- Classic artist brush set or Classic Artist brush symbols set
- Adobe Illustrator Floral Brushes set
Determine the size and shape of the blank space. We will now use simple quadrant shape.
Create a new layer bellow. Use the simple artist brush symbol below the layer that contains the quadrant to create an “outline”
Again, create a new layer. Now add some ink splatters around, on that layer.
Add some swirls on the layer above the layer that contains ink splatters (but bellow the layer with the shape and layer with it’s outline)
Add some more swirls, and also add some swirls on the new layer on the top.
In the end, add some stars… and that’s it.

If you’re wondering how to colorize the symbols or even change their shapes: select all symbols and use the “Break Link to Symbol” – now you can manipulate shapes and colors until the dawn breaks or until you’re happy with the results – whatever comes first

Latest news: yesterday I bought 2 domain names, one is my “user name”- bsilvia (bsilvia.com) and the other is “blogffiliate.com”. Webhosting at siteground.com as usual, I’ve been their customer for 6 years and never had any problems or issues. So I’m sticking with them.
** // UPDATE ON WEB HOSTING: Unfortunately, in the meantime I had issues with Siteground. HUGE ISSUES. At some point they decided that my site is taking up too much of their resources and that I should go for $97 dollars hosting plan instead of $4.50/month. I had something like 24 hours to convert to ueber-expensive hosting. Non-negotiable. I was desperate. Checked on my statistics, they did not show any changes, same traffic as always. They refused to provide any kind of technical assistance or explanation. I had to convert to $97 – immediately. So, I paid. I kept on paying until I moved to Hostgator which is now my host of choice. ** //
Maybe I’ll transfer this one to new domain “bsilvia.com”, so wish me luck with my new blogs (I’m gonna need it)!
