Guys! My apartment is a mess! It is the first day of the removal (we’re moving to that house we bought few months ago) and, you can imagine, it’s just boxes all around this place.
So, I thought, since I won’t be making any new posts for a next few days, I’d just show you my mock-up for the next Photoshop brushes I had in mind. I’ll call them: Fantasy birds :)
I started to make this draft today, but, since the movers are coming on Monday, there was now way for me to finish it today too. I mean, I would need at least two days anyway. So, I hope you like the preview and I promise to have the full package ready as soon as I settle down at my new place.

1. What I need to do?
- You need to make Christmas graphics. One, two, tree … well, not more than three submissions please. It can be Christmas card, Christmas Party Invitation, Gift tag, Scrapbook cover … or any other graphic applied to paper or web or video any other media, like mug, or shirt … does’t matter.

I was minding my own business the other day, browsing various design competitions that are not too expensive to take part in when I ran into something that immediately threw me back in time. Back to my teenage days.
Dr. Martens footwear announced a footwear design competition where everybody has a chance to apply their design for boots and submit to their panel review.
The best designs will be applied to Dr. Martens next boots.

I don’t know about you, but when I was (a bit) younger I (of course) had my favorite pair of boots. You know the worn out footwear that you just can’t get let go. Until they are worn-out to the extend where toes are popping out. And then you spend the rest of the year trying to find the exact copy of them, but no matter how similar or even identical they are, the feeling is just never the same.
Of course.
I had a pair too. I wore it for years. Until they became so dilapidated as to be unwearable. I still keep them somewhere at my mothers place just for the sake of keeping staff that I just can’t threw away for some emotional reasons. (I guess it has something to do with letting go of the youth days :))
So, of course, no need to say it, I jumped onto that competition and created several designs of my own in an instance.
So far, my Photoshop Brushes were applied to many many different media, but to apply them on boots, and Dr. Martens ones? That never occurred to me as an idea. I don’t know if my designs will be selected or not, but it was a real pleasure to create them.
If you feel inspired, throw your own designs using my brushes (it is in line with Terms of Use so don’t worry :)) – And, of course, show me what you did :) I’d love to see your ideas!

You know, it got me thinking this Dr. Martens boots design competition. Now, this is one brilliant marketing strategy they implemented here. Why?
- They raise visibility involving their customers into active participation in the production process. For free.
- They get information on what direction to take in their next designs and that info comes from their own target audience. (Very important!)
- All these people who make designs they will write about it on their blogs (check my post for instance), send links by email, post on forums etc etc … so it is kinda huge free marketing for Dr. Martens Company making them even more popular and raising their visibility.
- People create their own galleries on http://www.dmbootdesign.com/ so it’s kind a community building at the same time.

So, from time to time my friends ask me to do some video for them. If I have enough time, I do it, why not. So, last week a friend of mine asked me if I could make a small video invitation for their wedding.
I took my camera (Panasonic NV-GS 180 – 3CCD – 2,3 mega pixel) and we met at the park (2 minutes from my home).
I did the video editing in After Effects CS3and – voila!

The story about Photoshop brushes has some controversy in it.
On one hand, many people, even experienced Photoshop users, don’t really use this feature very often. Maybe because it was pretty limited before and not so widely known among early Photoshop adopters.
On the other hand, beginners know even less about it as it sounds like some advanced users tool.
And it’s not. I’d even say that Photoshop brushes are great tool for beginners.
Why?
Because, you can make a great looking graphics in literally 10 seconds with Photoshop brushes. Period.
Once the spacing and scattering parameters (and others) are adjusted (and anyone can do that) it is only a matter of making several strokes with the brush along your working area.
You don’t need to know how to draw, how to work with paths, how apply special effects, play with masks … as I said – Photoshop brushes are perfect beginners tool which can, in hands of an advanced user, create a graphical symphony in no time.

Using bitmap image from tutorial How to create your own custom brush in Photoshop you can easily create your own vector brushes in few steps:
Step 1
Simply place an image (download it here) in Illustrator and use live trace or Silhouette plug-in… you should get a grungy style vector brush like this one:
Step 2
Choose one of the elements with select tool (use “V” – keyboard shortcut for selection tool), ((for instance, you can rotate it 90 degrees.))
Step 3
Open the Brush palette (Window – Brushes) and choose New Brush option. Select the brush type, in this case – Art. Leave other options as they are and rename it. Save.
Voila – try it!
