Guys,
Most of you already know I’m all about working from home and helping others to do the same. Working from home has many advantages and disadvantages.
However, advantages upbeat disadvantages and what happened to me a few days ago clearly proves it. I simply could not imagine or think of a nicer Christmas surprise gift then the one I got from a dear friend of mine: Fiona Watson.
And here is what I got from her:
Of course, Christmas tree ornaments immediately found their place on my Christmas tree! :)
Now, “What’s so special about these gifts?”, some might ask.
Plenty of things, but let’s just name the most important ones:
- Fiona is a person who I admire and respect so much. Getting a surprise gift from her makes this gift, well, very special.
- Fiona just started a work from home business, and it takes strength and courage to do that.
- The gifts she sent me are awesome (They represent the kind of items she sells on her ETSY Store [Link to Fiona's ETSY Store Figero Design ->])
- Some of the presents I got from her are decorated with my Photoshop brushes, so how could I be more proud and happy?
So. What can I say? Way to go Fiona! You are doing a wonderful job and I am sure your work will be a success on ETSY, so hold on there, keep on doing the great job and a 2012. will be a year of success to you.

White furniture. Now, what does this remind you of? Well, I bet most of you guessed. It is “Imagine”, video by John Lennon, one of the greatest composers of our time and, many of you will agree, ”Imagine” was, and still is, one of the greatest pieces of music in modern history.
Universal message of peace.
White is a universal color. It symbolizes peace, tranquility and purity and that is why many opt to surround themselves with white in their homes too. Interior designers will often recommend white as the predominant color for the home interior. Many were inspired by the video (“Imagine”) I was talking about and decided to furnish their homes with white furniture. It is a message of peace after all.
And I am not just talking about white curtains or walls. No, I am also talking about a kitchen with white dressing table, or a living room with white bookcase display or, finally, a bedroom with all white bedroom furniture.
Now, no matter what we think about different interior design styles, I believe we can agree that they are, in a way, telling us about their owners, people who live there. Personally, I am all for white. Not necessarily all furniture should be in white, but, white in combination with, say, green is my combination of choice. I like this fresh and rustic country-Mediterranean style and home decor.
Anyways, whatever the color of your furniture is, in the end, I’d like to remind you on the universal message John Lennon sent us in his “white video” (“Imagine”) in 1971. three years after Beatles recorded their “White album”.
And, finally, I’d like to end this post with the excerpt from “Imagine”:

Music heals the soul,

If you live in the U.K. – this is for you
Now, here is something I always wanted to do myself (actually I planned to offer a service like this, but not photo on canvas but photo printing and framing) Photo in canvas. You probably know how cool photos on canvas can look and if it is your shot, even better! And I don’t just mean for your home, but also office space and other kinds of interiors too.
I remember, a few years ago, I ordered one of my photos to be printed on canvas (it was an image of a white feather, blue sky was in the background and there was one drop of water on it, looked really cool). So, I got that printed on canvas, bought the wooden frame and figured: “I can stretch it myself. Should be easy.“
How wrong was I! Stretching the canvas on the wooden frame required so much muscular strength that even my hubby and I had a hard time getting it done. I ended up with blisters on my fingers, we nearly destroyed the photo in the process and in the end it did not look the way it looks in stores and galleries.
Why am I saying this? Well, this was years ago. Now, there are on-line services which will allow you to:
- upload your image,
- sit back and wait for your canvas prints to be delivered to your doorstep.
That’s how easy it gets these days.
As you know, I rarely do reviews of other web sites or businesses. It really needs to something cool, or something I, personally, am passionate about. Otherwise – I’m out.
Now, for the Photo in Canvas web site. I liked it. Not just because the service they offer is exactly what I needed (and still need today) but also because they made it simple and took the effort to offer some additional features in addition to their offer.
So, not only that you won’t have to suffer a sore muscle fever after stretching the canvas on frame yourself, also, you won’t have to be a Photoshop guru in order to prepare your image for printing. As a matter of fact you won’t need know to glitch about Photoshop or any other image editing software to prepare your image for printing. They will do all this for you. After uploading your photo, Photo on Canvas staff will make sure it meets the technical requirements. They will even remove the red-eye effect and reduce the blemishes for you.

Look what I’ve found! Totally cool site (no, they did not pay me a dime to say this :)) where you can upload your image (or play with some of their images) and apply totally cool retro and vintage effects on it.
I tell you I had fun with some of my images there, and down below there is one example.
It would be totally great if this application offered some Photoshop brushes too!
So, if you want to have some fun with your photos I can totally recommend: Pixlr-o-matic
And when you save the photo, it also states which effect did you apply so you can repeat it without looking for it again.
So, what I did, I played a little with one of the images I had. This is my friend Martina.

Now, as you can notice, a few brushes would really make a difference, so I added some for the decoration and the final image looks like this:

- Press F5 to bring the Photoshop brushes window,
- press “B” to activate the Brush tool,

(I know, the heading is not funny, but that’s how you make an introduction to funny stuff. Just bear with me.)
I know the heading sounds like the news from the future, but the way things go, future not too distant. The world is changing, the Internet is changing too. Facebook has changed everything; the way we communicate, the way we share our thoughts images, videos and “statuses”.
Everybody’s got their own wall now days. (And some wanted to Tear Down The Wall, back in the pre-historic Pink Floyd time). If you did not change your status on the Face for more than a week, the chances are you are dead! If you don’t “friend” with your neighbor on “The Face”, he will consider you hate him and will not talk to you any more (the least to say, there have been even some physical attacks recorded for ignoring the Facebook Friendship request). Facebook even killed Second Life for heaven sake! Now, what does that say? Life on Face is soo much better! You still get to be what you want to be, but you also get to mingle with real people from the real world!
They way things are now, it seems like Facebook is taking over the Internet. When it comes to being on line, or being alive for that matter, like the common behavior these days is: a) Turn on your computer, b) Start Facebook, c) Live on Facebook, d) Turn your computer off, e) Go to sleep. I am exaggerating a bit.
Or, am I?
Yep. We are already talking pre and post Facebook time. You know these conversations:“Oooh, that was so long ago, it in pre-Facebook time! Almost nobody was alive then!” The architecture: “This house was built even before the Facebook time!” not to mention how “This guy! He is so old! He was born before Facebook even existed!”
So, when I check on my blog traffic analytics, it is obvious, most of the traffic are returning visitors, guys who just liked my posts and graphics even before the Facebook time. So, what does it say about you? I mean if you are reading this, it means that you still believe in life outside of the Facebook. So, that makes at least two of us. At least :)
Well, anyways, knowing all this, I decided that I will improve my presence on the Facebook (and there are some cool freebies on our Graphics-Illustrations.Com Facebook fan page) so, I created new Facebook Page using Facebook Template from pagemodo.com. It’s easy to customize and easy to install it: as long as you know how to make cool graphics (or have some cool Photoshop brushes) you should have no problem doing the same for your Facebook page :).
So, this is what my new “Welcome” Facebook page looks like. And the graphics there were done with a little help from my friends – Photoshop brushes / Digital stamps.

How would you like to be paid fairly for your work?
“Now, what kind of a question is that?” I hear you ask.
Of course, everyone would prefer to get a fair pay for the work they do, but, unfortunately, as you probably know, the gigantic proportion of people around the world are not lucky enough to get fair wage by their employer.
Many big international corporations are abusing (and contributing to) poor conditions and huge unemployment rates in poor countries and their corrupt governments are allowing them to pay ridiculously low wages for their work.
As a matter of fact two billion of our fellow citizens who, despite working extremely hard, survive on less than $2 per day.
I know, you don’t like it too. Thankfully, there were many other smart, ethical and able people who did not like it either so they started a Fair Trade Organization and in order to support the case, I want to dedicate this post to all citizens on our planet who are underpaid, exploited and humiliated for the sake of the profit for their employer. And why today? Because, today is the World Fair Trade Day.
Basically, the idea behind the Fair Trade Organization is – help people from poor countries sell their products on a global market for the fair price. This will, in most of the cases, be the same prices as you would get in “normal stores” but this time, WFT inspections confirmed that the persons who made the product were fairly paid for their labor. Sometimes these prices will be higher, but not because someone is making profit on their work, but because logistics behind getting the product to your country were expensive. However, the bottom line is that the one who made the product was fairly paid for it. So, ever since I discovered that there is an organization doing that, whenever I run into a product with this logo:
I try to buy it (especially when it comes to coffee and chocolates and pralines :)).
Because, no matter how hard it is with the shortage of money these days, we all need to remember those who are having much more difficult times than us.
So, there are many stores around the world with that logo. New ones are being opened every day and that is a good sign. It means that the world is awakening. People are beginning to see what’s behind the unnatural wealth of 0,05% of the world population and the misery of 90% of the population. So, next time you run into the WFTO logo, you will know what it means.
In these stores they sell all kinds of products: Accessories,Art, Bag, Clothing, Collectibles, Crafts and Gifts, Glassware, Home Decor, Jewelry, Pottery, Toys, Woods … but also coffee, tea, chocolates, etc… you name it.
I particularly feel for woman from undeveloped countries selling their stuff on a site like this http://www.fromherhands.com/. Probably because I am a woman too, making my own stuff and trying to make a living out of it.
Anyways, as I said, we all want to paid fairly for our work and since I truly believe in “do onto others as you would like others to do onto you” principle, I wanted to help the cause. By buying Fair Trade products and supporting the case on my blog.
Be fair, love each other and hug the person next to you… now!

Valentine’s day is here. And it’s highly commercialized. Here is the alternative approach. I hope you will like it. Actually, I believe that many of you think this way too.
The feeling/emotion of being in love (not loving – being in love, having a “crush” on someone) is the most precious feeling we can experience in our live time, here on earth (I don’t buy the story that everything ends once we seize to breed, that’s why I say “life – here on earth” there are other “modes” of being alive out there.).
Those of you who experienced the feeling of “being in love” will certainly agree with me. It’s close to “madness” but in a good, positive way. It is also the “everything makes sense now” feeling. Also, it is a total absence of worrying or caring about the stuff we worry or care about when our mindset is in “normal” state.
All that matters, in the time of being in love, is to be in the company of someone we’re in love with. As much as possible. That’s all that matters. It doesn’t matter where, when or what you do. It is a fuzzy, warm feeling in the stomach and it feels better than any other drug that human or nature came up with. (Not that I tried all the drugs in the world or something, but once you know what it feels to be in love, you don’t go after drugs, because you know nothing came close to this.)
But, of course, we live in a “consumer” society and we need to spend in order to make the economy grow isn’t it? Well, I don’t “buy” this. We are led to believe that the best way of showing love is to BUY something for them. BUY a present. SPEND money. These are the messages we are all bombarded with and exposed to 24 hours a day (Ok. we still have the time when we sleep to be on our own, but I wouldn’t count that they won’t find I way to get to us there too).
Well, my message is: DON’T BUY anything for the one you love. DON’T! You just can’t buy love. If you could, it would be on the supermarket shelves already and it would probably be heavily discounted today.
Here the approach I prefer. Of course, we want to give something to the ones you love. That’s perfectly normal. Expressing love is perfectly normal, cool and ok. Now, what is the only asset we all have, but are limited with? And I mean ALL of us who experience life here and now on this planet? It’s the time. So, for this valentine’s day, take the time, and MAKE something for the one you love.
I create Photoshop brushes and the best way I can contribute is to give them to you so you use them and make something. Make a Valentine’s card. Make a poem, decorate it with Photoshop brushes and print it out. Make an envelope (here is how ->). Take the time to make it look good. It will make both of you so much more happy then just getting a perfume or some hi-tech gadget from the store.

But, first of all, I owe you guys a BIG apology! Our dear simple on-line designer application had a bug which we were not aware of for too long. Light colored shapes did not look good on dark background after the rendering! Therefore only graphics done on a light background looked good. Now, the bug has been fixed and we all works like a charm. So, once again, I am really really sorry for this. You can go ahead, test the designer now! And if you find another bug I will reward you. :)

Of course, this little application is nowhere near the Photoshop but it still allows you to:
- Rotate the brushes: Ctrl (on Mac Cmd) + Left and Right Arrow Keys
- Re-size the brushes: Ctrl (on Mac Cmd) + Up and Downl Arrow Keys
- Change transparency
- Color it (solid colors only)
You can, also, choose whether you want to work with some of the backgrounds I provided or you want to work on a solid color background, this application will allow you to do both.
Finally, you get to pick the font and write something.
Use “Clear” button to start again!
Have fun (important).
It might take a while for the application to load backgrounds so please be patient. Thank you :)

Ladies and gentleman,
my dear friends, visitors, designers, scrapbookers, photographers, Photoshop enthusiasts, GBG members …
I am very, very excited at this very moment :))
You see, I wanted to have a video trailer for 800+ Photoshop brushes MEGA SET for a long time. Mainly, because video is one of my passions. I just love to see a good looking videos, just as much as I enjoy good photography or good graphic design.
Still, creating a good video trailer, even if it is short one, like minute or so, takes a long time. Much longer than you probably think. And videography it is a very demanding discipline. Especially if you are not that good with motion graphics software like Adobe After Effects or similar. It’s not just that. To make video like the the one in this post, you need to to be good in some vector editing software (like CorelDRAW! or Illustrator or Inkscape). And, you must be good in Photoshop or similar image editing software. Years of experience will help and finally, you need to have a lot of time, because if it is not your core business, it will take you longer to do the video editing.
But, I am a lucky person! I am lucky for having some great friends in my life and one of them is called Igor (whatever you might think of that name, Igor has nothing to do with Russia or Russian mafia). Despite of the global perception, not all persons called Igor are necessarily a members of Russian mafia. Some of them are really nice people and a very very talented videographers! And my friend Igor is one of them.
He is not just a good friend, talented videographer, oh no! He is also talented musician (not that we have similar music taste, but still, he is gifted when it comes to guitar) and a very good designer. So, what can I say. We put our heads together, I came up with wordings and a basic concept he added some of his own ideas and turned it all into reality!
Then it was only a matter of time before this awesome video trailer for my flagship product, 800+ Photoshop brushes MEGA SET is finished.
