I was checking that stats of my blog the other day when I realized that more than 3000 visitors are coming to this site every day. Now, how cool is that? That’s, like, 30 000 in 10 days! I will not calculate more.
Also, many of you write about great stuff you did with my brushes and I’m really happy for all of you.
So, I was thinking, why don’t I make a post about your work. It would, definitely, help you get visibility and for me, it would be pleasure to help you promote your work!
Gang, I was minding my own business the other day, browsing various design competitions that are not too expensive to take part in when I ran into something that immediately threw me back in time. Back to my teenage days. Dr. Martens footwear announced a footwear design competition where everybody has a chance to apply their design for boots and submit to their panel review.
The best designs will be applied to Dr. Martens next boots.
I don’t know about you, but when I was (a bit) younger I (of course) had my favorite pair of boots. You know the worn out footwear that you just can’t get let go. Until they are worn-out to the extend where toes are popping out. And then you spend the rest of the year trying to find the exact copy of them, but no matter how similar or even identical they are, the feeling is just never the same.
Of course.
I had a pair too. I wore it for years. Until they became so dilapidated as to be unwearable. I still keep them somewhere at my mothers place just for the sake of keeping staff that I just can’t threw away for some emotional reasons. (I guess it has something to do with letting go of the youth days :))
So, of course, no need to say it, I jumped onto that competition and created several designs of my own in an instance.
So far, my Photoshop Brushes were applied to many many different media, but to apply them on boots, and Dr. Martens ones? That never occurred to me as an idea. I don’t know if my designs will be selected or not, but it was a real pleasure to create them.
If you feel inspired, throw your own designs using my brushes (it is in line with Terms of Use so don’t worry :)) – And, of course, show me what you did :) I’d love to see your ideas! Love, Silvia
P.S. You know, it got me thinking this Dr. Martens boots design competition. Now, this is one brilliant marketing strategy they implemented here. Why?
They raise visibility involving their customers into active participation in the production process. For free.
They get information on what direction to take in their next designs and that info comes from their own target audience. (Very important!)
All these people who make designs they will write about it on their blogs (check my post for instance), send links by email, post on forums etc etc … so it is kinda huge free marketing for Dr. Martens Company making them even more popular and raising their visibility.
People create their own galleries on http://www.dmbootdesign.com/ so it’s kind a community building at the same time.
I believe that life should be about happiness and joy. That’s what I think we’re here for. To be happy. There are so many things that make us happy, I believe each of us could make a pretty long list. I am no exception to that.
One of the things that make me happy is when I get an email or comment where someone says he or she used my brushes to create new great designs. And just today, I received a comment like that Maria from http://digifree.blogspot.com. Maria’s blog is, in my opinion, one of the most useful resources when it comes to digital scrapbooking. It’s a digital scrapbooking freebie search engine. And those floral swirls you will see on her blog, they come from my Swirled Floral Edges Photoshop brushes collection. And that’s what makes me proud and happy!
Maria, happy birthday and I wish you many many more happy and successful years with your blog!
Another thing that makes me happy is to make someone else happy. I guess many of you are like that. So, if you want to make someone happy go ahead. Pick up that phone now and call that someone, ask him/her how they feel. Tell them how much you appreciate them.
Doesn’t it make you happy when you make a sale? Someone might ask. Yes. It does. And not because of these 10 or 20 dollars. But because of the dream of the freedom. Because of the dream that living out of doing something you enjoy is actually possible. It’s the possibility of freedom to do what I want to do what makes me happy.
OK. So much about happiness. If you’re not happy right now, go ahead, make a list of things that make you happy and make these things happen’.
I was browsing the net, minding my own business the other day, when I ran into one more commercial that uses the stupidest phrase ever used in marketing copy: “Free gift inside!“. Again and again and again they insult us consumers with this nonsense phrase! There are variations – as you know. Sometimes it’s “We’ll send you a free gift” of “Free bonus!“.
The word bonus implies that it’s freeotherwise it would not be a bonus. It would be just a normal payable product or service. Gee!
Free gift. Hey! C’mon!? What’s this? Are we, consumers, so stupid? Are marketers trying to convince us that gifts should usually be payed for? Like: “Yo, dad, c’mon buy me a gift for birthday, I’ll pay you for that.” How silly is that???
But, no! Marketing copywriters are constantly emphasizing the “Free gift inside!” phrase. Wow! A gift? And it’s free??? Hey!
Can’t they just say: “Buy this and we’ll send you a gift.” Why to they need to push the “free” word, like, just about everywhere??? Soon, in restaurants we’ll hear: “Order a soup and we’ll rent you a spoon and the plate – for free!” Just for the sake of pushing the word “free” in the sentence.
It’s just so annoying. I had to share it with you. And I’ll make a promise. I will never never offer a “free gift” when you buy Photoshop brushes or vectors, or scrapbook kits from me. I will present you with a gift. Normal gift. We all know what the word “gift” means. I don’t know about you, but I hate the BS.
Brushes are compatible with Photoshop 7.0, CS, CS2, CS3, CS4 and CS5, but also with the Photoshop Elements 6.0. I hope you’ll like it and – have fun creating!

And then, it just comes out the way you wanted it. Even better.
That’s exactly what I’m talking about. So, today, I proudly present you

KUBOTA SLOPPY BORDERS
Get over 125 Kubota Sloppy Borders in this fantastic border Pak.
From elegant thin borders, to eye-catching medium borders, to heavy borders for a bold statement, this Pak adds the finishing touch to your tweaks.
KUBOTA SLOPPY BORDERS have always been a favorite way to present images in the old days of film. But with digital, this cool retro look is much more difficult to achieve. Scaleable, snap them on inside or outside your image, and even change the border color to fit your image!
To create the Sloppy Borders, Kevin Kubota and Craig Strong, (of Strong Photography and Lensbaby, LLC) went into the darkroom and individually printed the borders, using a variety of filed out negative carriers (the traditional way). Then, they were scanned at high resolution, and digitally prepared for overlay on any image.
Excellent for online presentations or slide shows, this is the finishing touch Pak that will set your images apart from the rest.
So, what what’s in there, you’ll ask, in this new package?

1. Save the Brushes Adobe Illustrator (.ai) file to the Adobe Illustrator directory as follows: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator **\Presets\Brushes 2. Start Adobe Illustrator 3. Press F5 to load the brushes
P.S. Did I mention that my brushes come with commercial free license? Use them in your commercial projects all you like!! :)
I know, there’s probably nothing wrong with good old fashioned photo albums where you just stack your photos in.
However, today, with digital imaging and software like Photoshop it takes only so much effort to create cool, custom made, little works of art that will hold the images from your, your friends or your clients wedding. And when it’s printed out, this album will not just be a placeholder for your photos, it will be like a little book that you designed and it will be unique, the one and the only that looks like that. Your own photo book.
If you’re not a graphic designer or if you are not familiar with vector editing software or you just don’t have the time to create graphic decorations for such a custom photo album, but you’d still like to make your own albums – then you’re probably looking at the perfect solution.
With Photoshop brushes it’s only a matter of having Photoshop* (any version from 7.0 up to CS3), pressing F5 to get the Photoshop brushes palette on screen and applying the ones you like the most to the background.
Then just add the photos and – voila! Your custom wedding photo album is all done! No need to bother creating background decorations ’cause they’re here already. Still, it’s up to you to decide which ones to use. Also, you’ll need to adjust the size and pick the colors. This can all be done real fast. To make it even faster please refer to my post about PS Brushes shortcuts.
So, if you’d like to accept this challenge, I prepared a real big collection of Photoshop brushes for you to select from. 158 of them. And here is what this package contains:
* For those of you who don’t have Photoshop, you can still use this package. With a little help from THIS SOFTWAREyou can export the brushes into .png format and use them in any other photo editing software. Paint Shop Pro, Gimp (which is free), or … just any, because they all work with .png formats.
A few weeks ago, my sister got Seth Godin’s book “Small is the new big”. And naturally, she borrowed it to Darijan, because Seth Godin is his favorite author.
Somehow I started to read this book before him and after 15 minutes I got so many new ideas! It was amazing! This book is soo inspirational and encouraging for new enterprenuers! Of course, all ideas are worthless without the carrying them out in real life… but that’s another story. This one is about the bookmark.
The bookmark that came with the book was just a commercial for a car. It looked cheap. Somehow I felt I should make my own bookmark for this book. It’s only few minutes of work after all. OK. Maybe 20 minutes. Make It 25. :)
And here it is! I know, bookmark is just a little detail and should not matter much, but, doesn’t life consist of small little details like this?
So, you’re welcome to download this bookmark. It was created with the latest Photoshop Floral Shapes Brushes set. Cut it out, fold it, glue it and – voila! You might add your own details of course to make it more personal.
Size: 1.35″x6.2″ at 300ppi (hi-res for printing purposes).
Many of you used the opportunity to get the Grunge Love Scrapbook Set for free by buying my latest Photoshop brush Floral Shapes (the offer is still on the table :). Therefore, many of you got a hold on scrapbook kit for the first time and I receive many questions on how to use that kit.
That is why I decided to prepare a tutorial for all of you who are scrapbooking beginners, I’m gonna make a scrapbook dedicated to my sister Nina who I love very much.
So, here is the step-by-step tutorial on usage of the scrapbooking kit Grunge Love!
1. Start Photoshop and open one of the background files provided in „Scrapbook Page Kit: Grunge Love”. In this tutorial I used “bgr4.jpg”.
2. Choose the photos you want to use in this scrapbook page. Since I am dedicated this scrapbook to my sister, I used her photo (these funny photos are taken with fish eye lens.)
3. Drag and drop this photo to a layer above the background and open one of the frames (“png” files – transparent). Drag and drop the frame (in this case “frame01.png” from Scrapbook Page Kit: Grunge Love) to the layer above the photo. Align it and scale so that it fits.
4. If you want to work with corners separately, select the one you want to move with “Rectangular Marquee Tool” and move it around, or cut out the photo to fit the frame. (Tip: using simple Rectangular Marquee Tool or Polygonal Lasso Tool surround the frame corner and, while holding Ctrl key, press arrow keys up and down. Now the corner is selected. :))
5. Add another photo and add another frame. Now, you can rotate the photo and the corners (all layers) together (except for the background, you don’t want to rotate background). So, select the layers with photos and corners by holding the “Ctrl” key (Press Ctrl, hold it down and click on layers one by one until all layers are selected). Now press Ctrl+T for Free Transform and rotate the selected layers for, say, 15 degrees. Hit Enter once you’re done.
6. Now you can use one or two (or more) heart symbols. I went for heart with wings. Rotate them for 15 degree too.
7. Open the “loveLetters.png” file (also from Scrapbook Page Kit: Grunge Love) and add letters at the layer above.
8. Add one symbol in the background (just above the background layer), for example you can choose “heartTransparent.png” (from the same Scrapbook Page Kit). Use layer blend modes and select “Multiply”…
9. That’s it!
As you can see it’s quite simple. Everything you need is included in the kit (except for the photo of my sister :))
NOTICE: This package is quite heavy – 44Mb. This is because all images are in highest resolution 12″x12″ at 300dpi for those of you who want to print it in a professional way. I’m saying this because the download might take long especially for those of you who don’t have high-speed broadband Internet connection.
